Technics has introduced the next generation of its legendary SL1200 and 1210GR Direct Drive Turntables with a new GR2 version. These fourth generation versions of their mid-tier turntables, the silver SL-1200GR2 and its black SL-1210GR2, promise smoother and more accurate and stable platter rotation. The improvements are brought about by a new motor system that uses a digital amplifier to convert a digital pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to an analogue sine wave which then drives the platter, plus a new quiet switched mode power supply design. All of which is said to reduce minute vibrations in the platter caused by the motor, improving the electromagnetic conversion accuracy of the cartridge.

Technics iron-coreless direct drive motor

These new decks continue to use Technics’ iron-coreless direct drive motor whose fundamental design reduces “cogging”, a vibrational/stepping issue that creates uneven rotational movement. To further refine this excellent motor design and reduce any platter minute vibrations still further, Technics has updated the motor drive electronics using state-of-the-art digital control. This new PWM design uses delta-sigma (ΔΣ) modulation: a method of 1-bit D/A conversion, which is achieved by Technics’ Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimization (JENO) engine, a proprietary full-digital amplifier technology. Using digital technology to improve analog vinyl playback may seem counter intuitive, however, its outcome is a pure sine wave control signal that creates a perfectly smooth rotational motor/platter drive.

To further enhance rotational speed precision, the turntables utilize a rotation feedback system based on speed detection using a frequency generator powered by magnetic induction.

New “silent” switched mode power supply

All electronics require stable and clean power supplies in order to provide their best performance with lowest noise, the JENO engine is no different. So Technics have deployed a multi-stage “silent” switching power supply that operates at over 100KHz and combined it with an active noise cancelling circuit. Further improving platter noise and vibration reduction.

The remaining design of these models remains “as is” with this new generation maintaining:

  • The twin-layered bottom chassis that uses a layer of Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) on top of a layer of aluminum for robust vibration resistance
  • The twin-layered platter whose aluminum structure is damped by heavyweight rubber but now has improved rigidity, mass and matt contact area
  • The gimbal mounted S-shaped aluminum tonearm with detachable headshell
  • The four vibration resistant, height-adjustable feet, that use silicon rubber

Finally the finishes and cosmetics have been updated and as a nod to the environment all Styrofoam packaging has been dispensed with.
