High-end audio manufacturer McIntosh has announced the launch of the new PS2K powered subwoofer. Its a huge powered and sealed subwoofer that comes with an equally huge price tag. This enormous tower design comes with four 13″ (33cm) woofers and four dedicated 500watt Class D amplifiers. All claimed by McIntosh to create; “new depths of low frequency perfection”.

The four subwoofer have massive magnets and utilize McIntosh’s patented Low Distortion High Performance (LD/HP®) Magnetic Circuit Design, which significantly reduces distortion while increasing the driver’s power handling and efficiency. They have been developed to provide extreme linearity in order to reduce distortion, by having an extra long voice coil to support the drivers long excursion.

These new drivers use innovative multi-layer carbon fiber cones. Previously, carbon fiber cones were made from a single layer of the material that could flex, something which could negatively impact sound. This new layered approach ensures that the cones do not flex under their massive power amplifier drive. The new cones also having an integrated formed joint with the voice coil, resulting in extreme rigidity and high power handling capability. Extreme rigidity also extends to the cabinet enclosure that is nearly 1-1/2″ (3.8cm) thick ensuring very high rigidity and low vibration. McIntosh choose a sealed box cabinet design in order to ensure the elimination of any potential port noises.

Each of the four woofers is driven by a dedicated 500W Class D amp, altogether providing 2000W of total power output. The amps themselves are specifically calibrated to reduce distortion and elicit a clear, tight bass with minimized sound distortion. Making these subwoofers suitable for both music and home cinema usage.

Rear panel connectivity is extensive supporting both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors for; stereo input, stereo looped output, subwoofer input and subwoofer looped output with “type” switching. Once connected, various level and EQ controls are available to the user to include; level, phase, LP & HP filters and a three band parametric EQ. On/off control is available using the trigger I/O, with switches for Auto on/off and disabling the meter and logo back lighting.

With this much power at hand McIntosh has included their power protection technologies, including; Power Guard, a feature created to prevent clipping in real time and Sentry Monitor, a fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the amplifier’s output stage before the current exceeds safe operating levels and automatically resets when operating conditions return to normal.

Finally, the PS2K comes in a black high gloss finish, with carbon trim and an aluminum base. The packaging also includes a set of glide feet for hard floors and spikes for carpeting.
