REL’s No.35 And No.36 Reference Subs – Quick Look

Four years after the arrival of the No.31 and No.32, REL is replacing its flagship Reference subwoofers with the No.35 and No.36. Both continue to use 12 and 15 inch drivers respectively the same original powers but the amplifiers have been changed from Class D to a Class AB/D architecture. They maintain their Piano Black Lacquer finish and for those with deep pockets they are yours for £9,000/£11,000 or $10,000/$12,000 each.

The carbon-fibre cones are now driven by what REL calls is a Class AB/D architecture power amplifier, said to combine a traditional high-current Class A/B-style power supply with a Class D output stage. Powers levels remain at at 900W RMS for the No.35, while the No.36 retains 1,000W RMS. Supporting power supplies have also been beefed up with the No.35 using a 17lb toroidal transformer, while the larger No.36 steps that up to 19.5lb, with REL pointing out that the additional current reserves provide greater headroom.
The carbon fiber drivers have also had upgrades to include; a new cast-aluminium frame, redesigned suspension and a finer 12K carbon-fibre weave. All resulting in a quoted low-frequency -6dB extension of 17Hz for the No.35 and 15Hz for the No.36.

There have been no changes to external dimensions so existing Reference owners can still integrate these new models into existing vertically stacked Reference Line Arrays.

Plus both models retain REL’s Reference remote control, allowing high/low level gain, crossover, LFE level, phase and dual parametric EQ to be adjusted from the listening position.

Rear panel signal connectivity includes; 1 x RCA/XLR LFE input, 1 x RCA/XLR stereo input, 1 x high-level Neutrik SpeakOn I/O, 1 x RCA/XLR LFE output and 1 x RCA/XLR low-level output, plus 1 x DB9 for REL’s optional AirShip Direct system that adds wireless transmission of both High Level and .1/LFE signals.
