Wharfedale Nova Series Subwoofers – First Look

Wharfedale has released the Nova Series Subwoofers. A range of four active subwoofers comprising the Nova 8, Nova 10, Nova 12 and Nova 15. The model numbers corresponding to the diameter of their main drivers. All models are available in a matt black finish. Prices range from £799 to £1,299, $1,099 to $1,999 and €999 to €1,699.

All four models incorporate a downward-firing, mass-loaded passive Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR), that is designed to extend low-frequency output without using a conventional reflex port.

Each model uses a newly developed long-throw driver with a coated paper cone, heavy-duty die-cast chassis, high-roll surround and high-excursion motor system. A large-diameter voice coil is used for power handling and thermal efficiency, while an aluminium shorting ring forms part of the motor structure.

We are old that each Nova combines its driver, cabinet loading, Class D amplifier and DSP as part of a single system. Wharfedale’s Dynamic EQ adjusts low-frequency behavior according to playback level, preserving more bass extension at lower volumes while controlling driver excursion as output increases. Power amplification ranges from 200W to 360W depending on the model.

All four Nova Series models provide adjustable crossover, phase alignment and level adjustments for integration with different speakers and rooms, plus dedicated Music and Movie DSP modes. What you will not find is an app-based setup or automated room correction, like many SVS models. Rear panel manual adjustments are the way to go.

Rear Panel – Same For All Models

Rear panel connections include; 1 x stereo RCA line input with the right channel supporting LFE only, 1 x stereo – RCA line output and stereo speaker-level input via four binding posts. A 12VDC control trigger and a USB connection for firmware updates are also provided.

All models have an adjustable 40Hz-160Hz crossover range.
