AVM of Germany have released two new phono pre-amps, the new Evolution PH 3.3 and PH 5.3, described by AVM as carrying the “DNA” of the PH 8.3. They arrive with remote cartridge adjustment and modular expansion. This new pair offers the vinyl enthusiast the choice between solid-state (PH 3.3) and tube (PH 3.5) output stages, while keeping the underlying feature set largely identical. These new designs are housed in AVM’s screwless aluminium enclosure. Standard Aluminium Silver, and Brushed Black finishes are available together with an optional Cellini version featuring a hand-polished chrome fascia. Pricing for the Aluminium Silver, and Brushed Black versions is €4,990/€5,990 respectively.

Cellini Version

The PH 3.3 is the all solid-state model, with AVM placing particular emphasis on low noise. The PH 5.3 employs the company’s proprietary tube line output stage, with AVM claiming a service life of around 20,000 hours for its selected valves.

AVM PH.5.3 Internals

Both models support moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, with five gain settings. MC cartridges receive six impedance load values while MM cartridges are provided with a selection of six capacitance loadings. Six equalisation curves are also provided, together with mono/stereo switching, phase inversion and a switchable subsonic filter.

Both models feature a dimmable graphic display equipped with touchpoint sensor technology and an integrated proximity sensor. This allows you to control and adjust menu functions directly from the front panel by touching the designated areas on the glass screen. Alternatively, adjustments are may be made using AVM’s supplied RC 3 PH aluminium remote that allows gain, cartridge loading, phase inversion and subsonic filtering to be adjusted from the listening position.

MM RCA, MC RCA and MC XLR Input Modules

Together with supporting both MM and MC cartridges as standard. Each model also comes with a rear expansion slot that supports one of three input modules from the higher end Ovation PH 8.3. These include; MC XLR, MC RCA or MM RCA.
