Magico of California have released a new version of the nine year old A3 floorstanding passive loudspeaker, the A3 2027, their least expensive floorstanding model. It’s still a three-way, four-driver design, but all similarities end there. The 2027 edition’s bead-blasted, anodised aluminium panels are available finished in black, silver, red or blue, coming in at; £28,998 or $25,000 a pair.

Magico has comprehensively redesigned its A3 floorstanding loudspeaker for 2027, introducing a new cabinet, new drivers, revised crossover and engineering techniques developed for their flagship M9.

The aluminium cabinet design uses radiused vertical edges and a top plate that rolls into the side panels ensuring no hard corners and hidden fasteners. Its precision-machined base follows the same curves and sits on custom feet. Magico claims that the more rounded profile reduces edge diffraction. Internally, the constrained-layer damping works together with the bracing and bolt positions tuned using a Laser Vibrometer. Resulting in what Magico claims is a quieter enclosure with less cabinet signature than before. On and off-axis response being optimised using their robotic Near-Field Scanner.

The single 5″ mid-range and two 7″ bass drivers are redesigned. Each cone now sandwiches an aluminium-honeycomb core between carbon-fibre skins, keeping moving mass low. The claimed payoff being lower distortion and intermodulation distortion. The midrange and bass drivers employ titanium voice coils and copper shorting rings to curb eddy currents, with Magico describing their magnetic field as “super-stabilised”. The midrange adds a newly formulated ‘long-life’ foam surround. Sitting at the top of the cabinet is the new 1.1″ pure-beryllium tweeter that pairs a reworked diaphragm geometry with a neodymium motor built for extra-long linear voice coil travel, with Magico claiming improved power handling and lower distortion.

Sharing signals between these new drivers is a reworked passive crossover that uses 24dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley slopes, which Magico says keep frequency and phase response linear. Driver resonances are said to be handled by Magico’s Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology, with all crossover components being supplied by Mundorf in Cologne.

Finally, Magico quotes an 87dB sensitivity, and a 4-ohm impedance with a recommended amplification of 50-300wpc. Claimed frequency response is 25Hz to 50KHz, (dB limits not specified).
