Magico S-SUB 2023 – Preview

Magico of California, one of the leaders in high-performance loudspeaker design and manufacture, has announced their 2nd generation of the S-SUB. This new sub is a revised model of the original from 8 years ago and is designed to compliment the other speakers in the S-Series. According to Magico; “The new S-SUB was born from concepts taken from the groundbreaking Titan-15 subwoofer. The research and development that led to the flagship Titan-15 allowed the Magico engineering team to improve upon virtually every aspect of the original S-SUB”.

The Magico S-SUB 2023 features a sealed aluminum enclosure with a pair of front-firing 13” drivers. These new 13” drivers use a two-layer, 75mm voice coil with 0.6” of linear travel in each direction that is enabled by the driver’s spider that has tensile wires woven in. Each driver has a continuous power rating of 550W RMS. Its design uses a super-stiff aluminum cone to give the right balance between stiffness and weight, with an advanced motor system that results in a super-stabilized magnetic field employing multiple copper shorting rings to stabilize inductance and minimize distortion. All of this new technology, according to Magico, results in a driver optimized for delivering; “maximum SPL while minimizing music-related distortions in the low frequencies”.

Driving this pair of optimized drivers is a Class-D amplifier capable of 3200W. The state-of-the-art DSP software provides the user with setup flexibility and now includes a rear-panel display, enabling calibration of the S-SUB to the specific room and speaker system that it is paired with. This software offers three stored equalization presets that together with various other parameters are all accessed using a network-based interface (no W-Fi) and their supplied control software which is compatible with a MAC or PC. Other features include; auto-on detection, auto-off shutdown, clipping and thermal protection.

Finally the new enclosure was designed and evaluated using both both computer simulation and physical testing and being constructed from 6061-T6-grade aluminum, together with innovative bracing techniques and advanced damping materials, is said to result in an; “utterly silent subwoofer enclosure.”
