Following on from the design of their QSUB platform Magico LLC has announced the TITAN 15, that they claims is; ” a new pinnacle of the company’s engineering and design vision for the ultimate subwoofer”. It has been designed to reproduce low-frequency sounds with realistic force and energy, whether that’s the subterranean rumble in a Hollywood blockbuster or the lowest note on a pipe organ.

Tipping the scale at a back-breaking 390lbs the TITAN all aluminum enclosure contains two 15″ drivers arranged in a dual-opposed force cancelling arrangement. This massive enclosure is claimed by Magico to have a frequency response of 10 Hz-150 Hz and is said to be able to dig well into the infrasonic frequencies.

The enclosure uses innovative bracing and damping materials, contains the two 15-inch drivers, two 3200 watt class D amplifier and a sophisticated state-of-the-art DSP control system which can be accessed for optimization by the user.

The drivers use aluminum cones with 4-inch high-temperature voice coils attached to a custom tooled 10-inch dual progressive spider, enabling up to 1.6-inches of linear travel in each direction.

Each driver can handle 3200 watts of continuous power and comes with a super stabilized magnetic field and multiple aluminum shorting rings to stabilize inductance and reduce distortion. This arrangement is said to be able to deliver SPL’s of up to 136dB @20Hz with a THD of less than 1%.

Additional operational features include; multiple inputs, 3-presets, auto signal detection, auto shutdown, clipping sensor and thermal protection.

M&K Sound – X+ Series

M&K Sound is launching a refresh of their celebrated X series that was originally launched in 2013 and has found its way into many major mixing and mastering studios being used by numerous top sound engineers. The new range will be designated the X+. While still maintaining its distinctive push-pull design the new series is incorporating many new advances in modern subwoofer technology. The new line-up now includes three dual woofers; the X10+ 10” drivers, the X12+ 12″ drivers, and the X15+ with dual 15” drivers.

The new X+ range are all THX Certified with the flagship 15″ X+ attaining the dizzy heights of the THXDominus certification. One of the few subs available that has achieved this accolade. While the X10+ and X12+ achieve Select and Ultra certification respectively. These THX certifications indicate that the subs can reach THX bass levels in specified room volumes at specified performance parameters.

This THX certification is not just about how loud a speaker can go. A large number of other technical parameters must also be met at high SPL’s. These would include; distortion levels and type, linearity in frequency response, meeting THX’s bass management requirements, compression and group delay. THX conducts hundreds of tests on subwoofers to ensure that they meet certification standards. This ensures that a THX certified product provides the fidelity to ensure the user gets the experience that the artist(s) intended.

The concept behind the enclosure design has not changed being based upon a push-pull driver design in a sealed cabinet. With one driver facing outwards and the other bottom driver facing inwards. These drivers are then wired in the opposite phase of each other. The close coupled cones of both drivers are therefore moving inward and outward at the same time with respect to the cabinet. This technique has the advantage of significantly reducing non-linear cone motion and even-order harmonic distortions that a single cone can produce

This new design includes significant innovations and upgrades to the drivers design and power amplifiers:

  • A longer linear excursion
  • 30% more voice coil for higher power handling
  • The drivers have carbon-fiber cones
  • Extended aluminum shorting rings that M&K calls the “Distortion Killer Shorting Rings.” Should help reduce even-order harmonic distortions.
  • Increased power from new Class-D ICE amps

Comment

$32,000.00 is a LOT of money for just one sub, no matter how excellent its design and sound. How many residential rooms can use the kind of SPL that just one Titan is claimed to be able to generate, when many rooms often require two subs, (or even more) to help even out its LF response? You could buy FIVE M&K THXDominus X15+ for less than the cost of one Titan 15! That would definitely be my choice if I had pockets that deep and a room that big.
