Sorry, but I am a bit behind the curve for this firmware update as many of you will have already installed it. So I have included it here just for information.

December of 2023 saw a notable firmware update issued by PAC to all four of its flagship receivers. According to PAC, this update improves audio playback, overall functionality and the room correction experience on the, Integra DRX-8.4, Onkyo TX-RZ70, Elite VSX-LX805, and Pioneer VSX-LX805 AVRs.

The details are listed in more depth below:

  • Addition of Auro-3D® for Three-Dimensional Sound Experiences
    • Auro-3D is an advanced surround format that creates a more realistic audio experience by providing a greater spatial immersion by using lower, height, and top speakers. The feature performs best when playing audio that has been mastered in the Auro-3D format, but Auro-Matic gives almost any sound source a spatial upgrade by transforming mono, stereo, and surround sound into a 3D experience.
  • Roon Ready for High-Resolution Audio Decoding, Playback
    • This major upgrade for audiophiles with Roon subscriptions certifies these four AVR’s as being “Roon Ready”. The update allows these AVR’s to be recognized by Roon’s software as hi-res audio-capable network endpoints that can be fully controlled from the Roon interface. Now allowing users to combine locally saved files with streams from TIDAL, Qobuz and KKBOX to create a vast, interconnected digital library of high-resolution files rich in artist content, metadata and more.
  • Pre-Amp Mode
    • The new Pre-amp mode turns off the Power Amp output and changes the receivers to Preamp-only mode. By turning off the Power Amp output, PAC claims that the signal/noise level and sound quality is slightly improved. It also reduces power consumption.
  • Source Based Tone Mapping for HDMI2.1a
    • Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) allows a portion of the HDR mapping to be performed by the source device, rather than the display device, automatically producing an optimized HDR signal to maximize processing and display capability without manual user configuration.
  • Dolby Atmos® Music Playback Capability for Amazon Music HD
    • Amazon Music HD is one of the few services that now lets you listen to Dolby Atmos Music, but the device you use to stream Amazon Music has to be configured to receive undecoded Atmos Music, so the format can be correctly rendered. This functionality is now available on the four AV receivers allowing them to access Dolby Atmos Music directly.
  • Improved Dirac Room Correction Delay Times
    • Improved Dirac Live room correction delay times gives you greater flexibility over speaker placement. The update increases compensation from 20 milliseconds up to 50ms, which enables correction delays for speakers as far as 55 feet away.

For all models connected to the Internet, this firmware update will be indicated via on-screen and front panel displays for Onkyo, Elite, and Pioneer models. Integra owners should navigate to the AVR’s “Setup Firmware” menu and follow the on-screen prompts.
