Technics has announced its latest Grand Class direct-drive turntable, the Technics SL-1300G. This new model introduces advanced technologies aimed at achieving precise sound reproduction, with a focus on minimizing vibrations and enhancing rotational accuracy. The SL-1300G is designed for audiophiles seeking “a refined listening experience” and is available in black or silver.

ΔΣ motor drive chip and coreless direct-drive motor

The newly developed ΔΣ-Drive (Delta Sigma) motor drive system uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) technology, which is said to reduce motor harmonics and vibrations, providing a smoother and more accurate playback. Its coreless direct drive motor also aids in the elimination of the cogging an effect whereby DC drive turntable motors “step” between motor poles causing uneven rotation. These improvements combined with the motors twin-rotor construction reduces bearing load and minimizes vibrations, all adding to an improved sound quality.

The motor is directly connected to a three-layered platter, comprising brass and aluminum die-cast materials, with a damping rubber layer applied to the entire rear surface to prevent unnecessary resonances. This new design has an increased mass and therefore increased inertial mass, offering improved rotational stability. The platter is also precision balanced at the factory, reducing the risk of excess vibrations or noise during operation, once it meets the balance requirements it is appropriately labelled.

Low noise SMPS and noise cancelling power supply

Power to the the motor system is provided by a high-speed switch mode power supply (SMPS), that operates above 100KHZ and is designed to provide stable power with reduced ripple and noise. The supply features noise detection and an error amplifier that actively eliminates residual noise, ensuring clean and consistent power delivery to the turntable’s components.

Supporting the motor and platter assembly is a two-layered chassis construction combining bulk molding compound (BMC) and aluminum die-cast materials to help to improve rigidity and vibration damping. Additional reinforcing ribs have also been added to the motor and tonearm areas to further reduce unwanted vibrations.

The chassis of the SL-1300G is then mounted on silicone rubber insulators, which offer additional structure borne vibration isolation.

The design includes a traditional static-balanced universal S-shape tonearm with removable headshell. It is made from lightweight and rigid aluminum, and employs a gimbal suspension system with high-precision bearings. Adjustments include; tracking weight, bias, height for VTA, zenith and overhang, an auxiliary weight is included to accommodate various pickup cartridge weights.

Finally, phono signal connectivity is provided by a pair of unbalanced gold-plated RCA connectors whose cabling is internally shielded to reduce any external noise pickup.
