T+A’s New A 3100 HV Power Amplifier

T&A of Herford, Germany have released their A 3100 HV flagship Class A or Class AB switchable power amplifier that will be replacing the A 3000 HV. Weighing in at 38Kg (83.78lbs) this is strictly a power amplifier coming without volume control and just stereo inputs. This new model comes with an aluminium case with walls of solid, precision-milled aluminum and a pair of front panel VU meters. It will be available in silver or titanium finishes with black heatsinks.

The design uses an input voltage amplification stage, that drives an extremely linear, wideband, and cross-coupled differential cascode architecture, paired with a single-ended Class-A large-signal stage. This is turn drives a fully symmetrical current amplifier that uses highly advanced MOSFET drivers and state-of-the-art bipolar output transistors, that handle the large Class A quiescent current demands.

Output Devices

The main addition to this new design is its ability to provide a High Current Mode that operates in pure Class A delivering up to 75 wpc. With the standard Class AB High Power mode supporting up to 300wpc into 8 Ohms or 500wpc into 4 Ohms.

For those needing more power the A 3100 HV does not use a bridge mode, instead it parallels the outputs. An approach the company says delivers the extra power without the usual increase in distortion and increase in output impedance associated from bridging.

Powering the A 3100 HV is a newly designed 1000W toroidal transformer that is hermetically sealed and encased in a magnetic shield. According to T+A, its stray magnetic fields are eliminated at source and, kept from the audio circuitry by a 10mm aluminium panel. Twelve new low-ESR capacitors handle energy storage. For those with current hungry speakers the A 3100HV supports the addition of an external reference power supply.

The rear panel supports one pair of XLR and RCA line level inputs and two pairs of speaker binding posts allowing for bi-wiring and dual zones. Other connections include; 1 x RJ45 for home automation systems, 1 x 3.5mm 12VDC trigger in, 1 x 3.5mm RC in for IR handsets using the E2000, 2 x H-Link for control by other T&A devices and 1 x power link in for an external power supply.
