QUAD Elegan Series Loudspeakers – First Look

QUAD has announced the new QUAD Elegan Series, a two-model loudspeaker range designed to provide an accessible introduction to the company’s loudspeaker line-up. The series comprises the standmount QUAD Elegan 1 and the floorstanding QUAD Elegan 2. Both models were developed under the direction of QUAD Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau and are available in either a deep matt black or walnut wood veneer, both with a matt black front baffle.
According to QUAD, these speakers have been developed as an all-new loudspeaker range rather than an update of an existing design, and are both built around newly developed woven Kevlar drive units which use lattice-woven Kevlar combined with a self-damping resin.
The Elegan 1 is a two-way standmount design featuring a 165mm woven Kevlar mid/bass driver and a 25mm fabric dome tweeter.
The Elegan 2 is a three-way floorstanding design with twin 165mm woven Kevlar bass drivers, a dedicated 125mm woven Kevlar midrange driver housed in its own internal chamber and the same 25mm fabric dome tweeter. Both models use a profiled waveguide designed to improve high-frequency dispersion and off-axis performance.
Crossovers for both models use a Linkwitz-Riley design with polypropylene capacitors used throughout and a combination of air-core and laminated-core inductors depending on frequency section. The Elegan 1 crossing over at 2.9KHz, the Elegan 2 crossing over at 480Hz and 2.7KHz.
Elegan 2 and Elegan 1 internal construction
Cabinets are constructed from high density materials with internal bracing and damping materials, with bass extension enabled using the companies Airflow rear port system. Cabinet volumes have been optimised for each model with the Elegan 2 floormount using dedicated internal chambers for the bass and midrange drivers.
Rear panel connectivity on both models is a single pair of binding posts.
