Rogers Announces The PM510 S3 Monitor Loudspeaker

British loudspeaker manufacturer Rogers has revived one of its classic designs, the new PM510 S3 reference monitor. According to Rogers; “Originally introduced in the 1980s, the Rogers PM510 is a passive loudspeaker derived from the highly regarded BBC Active LS5/8 Grade One studio monitor. The design follows the same engineering principles established by the BBC for professional broadcast monitoring, where tonal accuracy, low distortion, and consistent performance were considered essential for critical listening environments such as recording studios and outside broadcast units. By offering a passive implementation of this proven platform, the PM510 allowed users to pair the speaker with external amplification while retaining the sonic character and monitoring precision associated with the original active LS5/8 system.”

The PM510 S3 bass reflex enclosure follows the well established thin-wall, damped cabinet construction associated with BBC loudspeaker engineering. Rather than relying on thick, highly rigid panels, the BBC approach used relatively thin cabinet walls combined with controlled damping to dissipate vibrational energy. The aim was to minimise cabinet colouration allowing the drivers to reproduce sound with greater neutrality. The exterior is finished in real wood veneers, while the front baffle is also formed from Baltic birch maintaining consistent material properties throughout the enclosure.

At the core of the new design is a VOLT manufactured 305 mm (12″) long-throw woofer with a lightweight PVC cone with twin rear suspension to minimise high transient distortion, an extended pole with flux control ring for low modulation distortion, and a low-mass copper-clad aluminium voice coil for improved transient response. High frequencies are handled by a 34mm tweeter that uses a silk Dome, a phase correction plate and a low mass copper clad aluminium wire, single layer voice coil for improved transient response. All designed to provide a smooth response and consistent dispersion.

Crossover between the two drivers is set at 2.6KHz with each driver using a an 18-element 3rd order, 18dB per octave passive filter composed off; high power ferrite cored inductors, high voltage film capacitors and screened toroid chokes. The result is a design having a reflex loaded port tuned to 35Hz and a frequency response of 45Hz – 20KHz +/- 3dB.
