The pressure on physical media is getting greeter and greater!

The French company Reavon that launched in 2021, and briefly filled the gap when Oppo left the market, has announced that it has discontinued all UHD Blu-ray players. The company cites the shortage of electronic components to continue manufacturing and repairing their players, the UBR-100, UBX-X110 and the UBR-X200.

When Oppo announced its own exit from the industry, Reavon was one of the few companies producing high-end UHD Blu-ray players. Only Magnetar can now carry that torch. It would appear that the number of companies pulling out from manufacturing high-end UHD Blu-ray players is accelerating at an alarming rate. Firmly driving even more nails into the coffin for physical media with both Pioneer and LG also joining the departures.

As mentioned, at least Magnetar is still going strong with its costly high-end player, the UDP900. While supporting the more affordable end of the market we still have Panasonic and Sony.

Clearly the demand for physical media and the associated players is rapidly dropping as the viewing public settle for the convenience of streaming over the visual quality of physical media…..what a sad time!

For any more information or announcements keep your eye on the Reavon web site.

I hope that there will be more 4K and even 8K Players from brands like Oppo, Magnetar, Reavon, Pioneer, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony.

The world needs more physical disc players and disc’s.
What about developing a brand new optical terabyte disc.
Streaming needs 10 Gbps Bandwidth Speed to serve us consumers the 8K UHD High Resolution on it’s service’s.
To much compression in a video isn’t good enough quality.
Only the disc’s can and will deliver us consumers an outstanding video and audio quality.

      Hi Marius,
While I agree with your sentiments, there are now very few disc player manufacturers left and none on the horizon. With Oppo out for good, the only real high-end manufacture is Magnetar and they have just released two new upgraded players both of which appear to be very good, I will be buying the lower cost UDP800MKII as I have now moved back to the UK and need a multi-region player, but still have my Oppo 205 for all my US discs. (the 205 can be upgraded to multi-region)
The chance of any 8K physical media is probably approaching zero right now as there is an increasing movement towards the relatively poor quality, but convenient, streaming options.
Thank you for your comments and popping by.
