Magico Unveils S2 Loudspeaker

Magico of Hayward, California, has announced a new passive loudspeaker called the S2. This floorstander is positioned between the S3 and S5 models, it is a three-way speaker system that incorporates three drivers with nanographene cones, and a single beryllium tweeter into its aluminum cabinets that weigh in at 132lbs (60 Kg) each. This new model is available in six different ‘Softec’ finishes and six gloss finishes and comes with a three-footer support system that uses constrained-layer damping for enhanced sonic performance.
The S2 is designed as a sealed compact three-way speaker in the S Series lineup, promising the brand’s performance from its four drivers in a smaller footprint and making it suitable for a wider range of spaces without compromising on sound quality.
Significant engineering attention has been applied to the design of both the cabinet construction and the the drivers using a Polytec Laser Vibrometer to detect and measure cabinet resonances and a Magico’s Klippel Near-Field Scanner to optimize the drivers in cabinet performance.
The cabinet is made entirely from one piece of extruded aluminum that uses an internal full-length vertical brace to stiffen the cabinet further. Resulting in minimum cabinet coloration.
Like the S3 and S5 speakers the S2 uses Gen 8 Nano-Tec driver cones with an aluminum-honeycomb core which is sandwiched by graphene-reinforced carbon-fiber skins. The cone’s core structure is thin and light with damping that reduces distortion levels still further. Drivers include two newly developed 7″ bass units that have improved chassis structure, force distribution and suspension, one midrange 5″ driver equipped with a 75mm voice coil, neodymium-based motor system with two extra-large magnets to create a super-stabilized magnetic field, a full copper cap and a pure titanium voice coil. Treble is handled by a 1.1″ (28mm) tweeter that is based on Magico’s flagship M9 speakers, it uses a diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm and neodymium-based motor system creating low distortion and high power handling. Magico claims that the S2’s upper frequencies now reach 50KHz.
Delivering the appropriate band of frequencies to each driver is handled by a three-way Elliptical Symmetry Crossover (ESXO) that has an acoustical target of a 24dB slope using a Linkwitz-Riley filter. The crossovers uses a full complement of German Mundorf components, including M-Resist Ultra foil resistors, while a new copper foil paper coil improves the noise floor by reducing microphonic effects. Connectivity is via a single pair of binding posts.
