LUMIN’s New S2 Network Player

LUMIN have released the S2 network music player. Its dual ES9038PRO DACs, internal dual-toroid power supply architecture borrowing heavily from the earlier X1 Flagship design. This new design also comes with digital inputs, fits within a CNC-machined aluminium enclosure measuring 350mm wide, 380mm deep and 107mm high and weighs in at 8Kg. The S2 is available in either a black anodised or raw aluminium finish and is priced at; £8,495.00, $8,999.00 or €9,990.00. 

This new design harps back to the X1’s dual-DAC approach, rather than following the fully discrete conversion architecture of the current X2 flagship. It uses a pair of  32 bit SABRE ESS ES9038PRO DAC’s configured in dual-mono mode, that are partnered with a fully balanced analogue output stage using dual Lundahl LL7401 output transformers. These DACs are supported by Dual femto clocks with FPGA-based distribution. The new internal DAC inputs support both coaxial and optical S/PDIF, with both digital inputs handling PCM up to 24-bit/192KHz and DSD64 via DoP. While a Leedh Processing lossless digital volume control allows the player to be connected directly to a power amplifier if desired.

The power supply now features a dual-toroidal design with separate analogue and digital circuitry and is now mounted inside the main enclosure rather than occupying a separate external housing. The shielding and low-noise regulation designed to limit interference between the power and signal sections.

Supported file formats include; DSD Lossless: DSF (DSD), DIFF (DSD), DoP (DSD), PCM Lossless: FLAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC), WAV, AIFF, compressed (lossy) Audio: MP3 and MQA. While streaming support includes; TIDAL and TIDAL Connect, Qobuz and Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, KKBOX, AirPlay, Roon, JPLAY and Audirvāna, with playback and system control handled through the LUMIN app for iOS and Android.

Rear panel connectivity includes; 1 x stereo RCA and XLR line level outputs, 1 x coaxial and optical S/PDIF DAC inputs, 1 x Gigabit SFP, 1 x RJ45 network and 2 x USB. Both the Gigabit Ethernet and industry-standard SFP optical port may be simultaneously used, allowing fibre networking to provide galvanic isolation from the home network.
