Two new powered reference speakers have been released by Klipsch, the R-40PM and R-50PM, they join their passive R-40M and R-50M designs. Both new speakers are updates to their outgoing R-41PM and R-51PM 2-way models. With their extensive connectivity, including support for vinyl enthusiasts, these new speakers provide a cost effective and simplified solution for both newcomers to stereo audio and those looking for an integrated monitoring solution.

Each pair of speakers has a primary speaker that contains one stereo power amplifier to drive the pair, 40wpc in the R-40PM and 60wpc in the R-60PM. They are connected via the supplied speaker cabling and use a passive crossover network in each speaker to drive the pairs of drivers. These speakers are therefore not active designs.

Both models use a new, larger and proprietary Tractrix horn design that provides improved coverage, bandwidth and directivity control. It uses a 1″, linear travel suspension (LTS) aluminum tweeter, for its active driver.

The mid/bass drivers are created from thermoformed crystal polymer (TCP), spun copper, 4″ in the R-40PM and 5.25″ in the R-50PM. The speaker cabinets are slightly larger than the previous models allowing the 40PM bass response to extend to 60Hz and the 50PM bass response to extend to 55Hz.

Dynamic Bass EQ is also included in each model that continually lifts the bass level as the volume level is lowered, it may be defeated using the supplied remote. Extended bass response can be achieved by adding a subwoofer to the primary loudspeaker’s unbalanced RCA sub output.

Input connectivity on the primary speaker is supported with an internal DAC and includes; TOSLINK, USB and Bluetooth, plus a 3.5mm AUX stereo line input and MM phono input for vinyl enthusiasts, that is switchable to line-level input for CD etc.

Control and Bluetooth setup is via the supplied IR remote or the primary speakers rear panel Volume/Source control.
