Despite the overall continued growth of vinyl and the drop in sales of plastic, many audiophile manufacturers continue to support the CD formats releasing new players and transports like this Cambridge Audio EVO CD. I just wonder if the ever increasing costs of vinyl are going to push more and more audiophile enthusiasts back to the CD format?

Sharing the same eye catching design as their existing EVO range of audiophile components this new, compact disc transport was designed in conjunction with their EVO partners to integrate exclusively into the same EVO range.

That means an anodized aluminum, half-width chassis, with selectable side panels, but no DAC, no analog outs and no coaxial or TOSLINK outputs. As an EVO specific product it sends all its music and album data over a single proprietary digital ‘EVO link’ to its partnering EVO 75 or EVO 150 all-in-one player/amplifier. Here the music data is converted into audiophile sound via its ESS SABRE 9000 series DAC and the CD album artwork and track information is displayed on the EVO 6.8” color display.

With its sole purpose of spinning a disc and passing accurate digital data to other EVO products, the design is minimalist with a single button on its fascia, to open/close the metal CD tray. The acoustically dampened metal chassis and drive tray ensures that nothing interferes with the signal and with the EVO CD using a new custom designed disc drive with S5 servo, an upgrade from the S3 found in CXC CD transport. It is said to provide better error correction and faster disc detection, for improved speed precision and data retrieval.

Operation is simplicity itself using the single front panel open/close button, supplied IR remote and StreamMagic app on your smart device, which will also display the current albums artwork.
