Wharfedale Introduces Super Linton Loudspeakers

Wharfedale’s best-selling loudspeaker, the Linton, has been reborn as the Super Linton, again! Back in 67′ the Linton was relaunched as the Super Linton but with only cabinet design modifications. This large-format vintage-styled and vintage-voiced 3-way standmount loudspeaker has now been upgraded to create a significantly new and improved Super Linton. This latest bass reflex design has a very slightly larger cabinet – 1.57″ (4cm) taller with two rear facing ports, a more powerful motor system for its 8″ (20cm) Kevlar bass driver, uses the same 5″ (13.5cm) woven Kevlar mid-range driver, has a new 1″ (25mm) tweeter. Plus improvements to the crossovers and cabinet construction. The Super Linton is available in three finishes, Walnut, Mahogany and Black Oak.
Like the original ‘Super’ concept, the new Super Linton benefits from an enlarged cabinet and propriety Wharfedale sandwich cabinet design that features a resonance-reducing combination of two layers of MDF complemented with a layer of latex-based damping glue. With the interior space filled with long-hair fiber and carefully placed acoustic damping foam, aiding with the absorption of internal resonances.
The new bass driver with a more powerful motor system improves the low-frequency performance, extending it down to 32Hz. A sealed cylindrical chamber is now employed for the midrange drive unit that works to cancel out mid-band specific back-waves by using multiple graded layers of long-hair fiber. The new treble unit features a lightweight fabric weave dome coated with special damping material and has a ceramic magnet motor system, all housed in a chamber that pushes its resonant frequency below the driver’s crossover frequency. The revised HF unit short horn profile is said to smooth the transition to the upper-midrange region while a new front plate improves dispersion.
Supporting these new drivers and the larger cabinet are the all new crossovers. The new split-pcb crossover design is said to reduce electromagnetic interference from the bass crossover components affecting higher-frequency signals. They use air-core inductors for the midrange driver and tweeter but employs proprietary ‘Super-Power’ laminated silicon-iron core inductors for the bass drivers due to their lower DC resistance for a given inductance, when compared to air-cored versions. Low-loss polypropylene capacitors, low-inductance resistors and internal cabling with a polyethylene dielectric and LCOFC (Linear Crystal Oxygen Free Copper) conductors are used to complete the designs.
The Super Linton’s quoted frequency response is 39Hz-20kHz, provides a listed sensitivity of 90dB and have a nominal impedance is 6Ω (8Ω compatible).
