As living spaces and apartments seem to be the trending towards smaller, the demand for small, high performance speaker systems, in particular subs, seems to be on the rise.

The MicroVee was originally launched in 2006 and saw a MKII version in June of 2020. Now the company has launched the significantly upgraded MicroVee X that maintains the original form but adds a new range of features and enhanced performance, such as; carbon kevlar drive units and its own dedicated remote-control functionality – providing direct access to volume, phase and crossover adjustments.

Measuring just 9 x 9 x 9.8 inch (WxHxD) and tipping the scales at approximately 19.9lbs, it is made for smaller spaces and offers good placement options. Paired with its Digital Drive Control System (DDCS), the new Class AB amplifier with four 34A/180V MOS-FETs, is claimed to deliver 800 watts of dynamic power. Despite the power being lower than its forerunner, the new amplifier can deliver higher currents, enabling the new forward firing 6.5 inch active driver, a high excursion double vented basket unit with PP reinforced membrane, together with its two side mounted 6.5 inch passive radiators, to deliver a 15 percent increase in volume across the entire frequency range of 32-180Hz (± 3 dB) when compared to the earlier MKII model.

Rear panel connections and controls give full access to all of the subs functionality. Input and output line level connectivity is supported on gold plated RCA sockets while speaker high level connections are nickel plated.

The new IR remote provides the ability to bypass the subs internal crossovers and gives direct access to volume, phase and crossover frequency for manual tuning from your seated position. The matching IR receiver eye that plugs into the subs rear panel is provided on a 3 meter cable.

Velodyne claims that this improved version X with its DDCS active signal-based approach that creates linear cone movement, controlling the unit’s frequency and distortion characteristics, reduces distortion to 1/6 of the values of comparable subwoofers.
