Totaldac d1-CD Transport – First Look

CD playback is still alive and well with Totaldac releasing their d1-CD transport. Claimed to be an “absolute reference” the player contains no DAC or streaming electronics, and is designed to provide a high-quality bit stream to feed other downstream devices. It is available in both black and silver finishes and its removable custom CD top cover ensures that you can’t hear the mechanics turning, and protects the user’s eyes from the laser.
The d1-CD uses the Austrian CD-PRO8 mechanism and benefits from much of the research that went into other Totaldac products. In particular it claims an internal oscillator that has an rms jitter of just 40 femtoseconds and employs clock distribution, spdif generator, ground and earth distribution, electromagnetic and mechanical damping and live-power transformer and power supply filtering employed in their reclockers and streamers.
Control is available using the supplied IR remote with track information shown in the front panel display.
Being powered by an external AC supply ensures excellent galvanic isolation, there are no transformer vibrations or interfering magnetic fields to affect the playback or digital signals.
Mechanically the d1CD is built around a solid copper plate as a mechanical ground reference which is then decoupled from the playback mechanics by 4 conical springs and 4 silicone rubber dampers. The copper plate is then isolated from the hi-fi rack by three anti-vibration feet with integrated ball bearings. The carbon intermediate plate and the cover are damped by ferrite rubber minimizing any vibrations.
Rear panel digital signal connectivity includes; 1 x coaxial SPIDF RCA and 1 x XLR AES-EBU. Optionally the RCA output can be replaced with a BNC output. Other connectors include the ground RCA connector that can be connected directly to the earth and 22VAC external AC power source connector.
