Thorens TP160 Knife Edge Bearing Tonearm – First Look

Thorens has announced that its new knife edge bearing tonearm, the TP160, will shortly be available with TD1600 and TD1601 turntables. It may also be retrofitted to existing 1600/1601 turntable too. The original TP92 arm will still remain available for purchase with both the TD1600 and TD1601 turntables.

TP160 Knife Edge Bearing Construction

The TP160 is a completely new development and a significant upgrade to the existing TP92 high-end tonearm. It uses a high-precision knife edge bearing together with a magnetic guidance system to effectively remove any horizontal and vertical disturbances.

The new TP160 is a classic J-shaped 9-inch tonearm that is crafted from precision aluminum tubing, featuring a classic detachable SME headshell and guided by a high-quality cutting bearings. Any tendency to breakaway is controlled by the magnetic guidance system, with anti-skating adjusted by using their classic spring technique. The arm also allows for adjustment in height, to adjust vertical tracking angel (VTA) and cartridge azimuth adjustment.

The scaled, two-part counterweight allows precise adjustment of the tracking force, supporting cartridges as heavy as 30gm, with the motorized lift and end shutoff of the TD 1601 also being available with the new TP160.
