Q Acoustics of the UK has completed its 5000 series with the release of the flagship 5050 floorstanding loudspeaker.

The 5050 is the largest in the 5000 series at 40″Hx15.2″Wx13.23″D. It arrives with two larger 6.0″ mid/bass drivers that together with the 1″ dome tweeter are claimed to support a 37 Hz – 30 kHz (-6dB) frequency response, with a 6.0 Ω nominal impedance and 91.8 dB/w/m Sensitivity (1m, 2.83V @ 1kHz).

The 5050 inherits all the design features from the rest of the 5000 series to include; innovative cabinet and driver technology from the company’s flagship Concept range, including tweeter design, Point-2-Point (P2P) bracing, Helmholtz Pressure Equalizers (HPE) tube technology, and the leading-edge C3 Continuous Curved Cone profile in the mid/bass driver.

Continuous Curved Cone profile

According to Q Acoustics, the 2 x 6″ mid/bass drivers cones use a C3 Continuous Curved profile that combines the bass performance benefits of a traditional straight conic cone with the high/mid-range frequency control of a flared cone.

Bass/Mid Driver Construction

The resulting cone is coupled to a 1″ voice coil that sits within a substantial magnetic field that results in a 50% increase in power handling over similar sized units.

High frequencies are handled by a  1″ high-frequency driver unit that is hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated from the baffle to prevent internal pressure modulations from the cabinet and adjacent mid/bass driver. The inner chamber is carefully vented for lower distortion, and it uses a lower crossover point of 2.7 kHz for seamless integration with the mid/bass driver.

HF Driver Construction

Areas of the cabinet that are susceptible to low-end frequency vibrations are fitted with point-2-point internal bracing stiffening the cabinet, claiming to help deliver “a more focused stereo image and a wider soundstage.” Further reducing pressure gradients and resonances within the cabinet four Helmholtz Pressure Equalizers are included that are said to further improve the frequency response.

No part of the design has been overlooked with attention even being given to the baffle fronts. These baffles have been laminated with a layer of butyl rubber and black acrylic trim to provide a damping layer suppressing vibration.

Finishes include; Satin Black, Satin White, Rosewood and Oak, and is supplied with solid aluminum stabilizers that feature top adjustable spikes, while low-profile speaker terminals provide connectivity.
