“Organik” DAC Upgrade For Linn Klimax Range
Recently the Scottish manufacturer Linn has developed their first, in-house, home grown DAC, the Organik. This new D/A converter can be retrofitted to all the variants of Klimax streamers and Klimax integrated speakers.
This new Organik D/A converter was originally introduced in ’21 as part of their flagship streamer the Klimax DSM. Linn has recently announced that this top performing DAC can now be retrofitted to all of their older Klimax DS and Klimax DSM streamers stretching all the way back to 2007, including the Klimax Exaktbox and Klimax 350 integrated speakers.
This new ‘discrete’ DAC is claimed by Linn to offer extremely low levels of distortion and noise. Linn goes on to say that “although simply making something ‘discrete’ does not necessarily result in high performance. The performance advantage of Organik comes from its unique combination of:
- Modulation method – Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Delta-Sigma
- Conversion stage – Discrete Analog Finite Impulse Response (AFIR)
- Implementation – Ultra-stable power, precision clocking, and expert PCB design”
By combining the the first two techniques Linn claims that this DAC design is; “immune to many of the problems that affect other discrete designs — where small errors in switching times or resistor values can generate distortion.” Bolstering this approach the DAC’s implementation is supported by an 8-layer printed circuit board (pcb) that has optimized physical layout and power supply delivery and clock traces matched to within a fraction of a millimetre.
The Organink DAC supports music data up to DSD256 and 24-bit/384kHz PCM.
