After many sleepless nights wondering whether I would draw the short straw, my Oppo UDP-205 has finally arrived, freshly manufactured in May 2018. For those of you still waiting I understand that there is a final batch going to arrive in August. Good luck to all of you still waiting in line.
This player is an audiophiles dream for the price. Playing virtually all audio file and disc formats including MQA audio. It supports sophisticated audio clock jitter reduction and a high quality analog power supply to drive all the analogue audio electronics. It’s high quality stereo audio processing and balanced audio outputs for left and right signals may be used for both stereo disc playback and multi-channel audio, preserving outstanding audio performance for the front left and right channels.
The players video performance is identical to that of its sister player the UDP-203. Having owned the 203 for a couple of months now I can say that its HD, 4K and in particular its up conversion of HD to 4K is outstanding. The 203 has played every single disc that I have put in it without a single stutter or glitch. I can only assume that the 205 will produce identical results; we shall shortly see. With the recently improved mapping of 4K HDR signals to SDR these players now provide the very best of what can be achieved in the combined worlds of audio and video playback.
