Mission Launches 778S Music Streamer

Mission’s first-ever music streamer, the 778S, is a versatile, half-width design and is available in both black and silver finishes. This standalone streamer has been designed in partnership with streaming specialist Silent Angel and physically matches the 778X stereo amplifier, another half-width design that marked Mission’s return to the amplifier market in late 2022. According to Mission the 788S integrates “a custom version of Silent Angel’s streaming engine with Mission’s own circuit designs” together with a specialised app for iOS and Android designs.
The 778S is Roon Ready and supports many streaming features to include; Connect versions of Qobuz, Tidal and Spotify, TuneIn internet radio, and AirPlay 2. Wi-fi and Ethernet are available, together with DLNA/UPnP compatibility ensuring that the 778S will be able to stream files from any connected storage devices on the same home network or NAS drive. File compatibility is extensive with the streamer supporting up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 with formats to include; FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, APE and DSD (DSF, DIFF and DoP), alongside MP3, WMA, AAC and OGG.
In an attempt to move digital artefacts out of the hearing band, the 778S upsamples all PCM streams to 352.8KHz or 384KHz before converting to analogue. Alternatively, users can disable this feature and select between five “reconstruction filters” to fine-tune the sound to their liking.
Control is available using the two front panel rotary controls (volume and input select) or the supplied remote plus the dimmable non-colour OLED that only displays text based information, no coloured album artwork images here.
Internally the DAC stage uses the ESS Sabre 32bit ES9038Q2M chip together with its proprietary clock and power supply circuitry. Mission has been careful to “eliminate noise and distortion in the signal path” by providing separate low noise power to the digital and analogue stages from a power supply powered by a low-noise toroidal transformer.
Rear panel connectivity includes; 1 x USB-C and 2 x USB-A ports and 1 x Etherenet RJ45. Outputs include; 1 x optical and 1 x coaxial digital and a stereo pair of both XLR and RCA connectors for line-level analog audio. On the front panel we find one 1/4″ (6.35mm) headphone socket.
