Mission 778CDT CD Transport – Update

All Image Credit: Mission
Mission have now released the third in the line of the 778 Series, the 778CDT CD Transport. Like the 778S Streamer and 778X Amplifier it is a half-width model, arrives in a precision-engineered aluminium chassis with a dimmable OLED display, comes with a remote, and is available in either a black or silver finish. Remember, a transport has no internal DAC so requires an external converter such as the one found in the 778X amplifier.

Mission claims that the 778CDT provides “exemplary data retrieval and signal integrity”. In part due to the fact that a separate DAC reduces the impact of electrical noise and interference on the resultant music signal, and its internal architecture and shielded transport mechanism are all designed to mitigate against vibrations and interference.
Playback options supported include; CD-R, CD-RW and data CDs, and digital files FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, MP3 and APE via the rear USB-A port.

Internally, its high-precision CD mechanism and custom-designed CD servo control system that uses a dual-core processing framework with a 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) CPU and dedicated MCU ensuring precise servo control and reliable error correction. All of which should ensure stable disc rotation and clean tracking, while the laser assembly and servo is optimised to minimise distortions like read errors and jitter.

Power is provided by an ultra-low-noise toroidal transformer which creates separate supplies for the digital audio decoder stage and motor and laser servo circuits, keeping the data stream clean and stable ahead of formatting.
Both the servo and decoder circuits are clocked from a TCXO (Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator) master clock that acts as a master timing reference. Mission have powered this stage with its own ultra-low-noise linear regulator and grounding scheme to remove power-supply-induced jitter. Mission claims this helps deliver “audibly cleaner transients, tighter imaging and greater musical coherence.”

Finally, rear panel digital connectivity includes; 1 x optical, 1 x RCA coaxial and 1 x USB-A.
