Hegel have announced their latest integarted streaming amplifier the H400. It is replaces the H390 and sits between the H190v and flagship H600. This latest design has been nicknamed Streamliner, and according to Hegel; “the H400 exemplifies streamlined design, offering an exceptional audio experience with ease of use and high value at its core”. Delivering 250 watts, a high-end DAC and an advanced streaming design, you only need to add speakers to create an audiophile system. Hegel have also released a supporting Hegel Control app.

This dual-mono design and symmetrical layout uses no equalizers while Hegel’s SoundEngine 2 technology offers instant distortion correction during amplification. The Class AB power amplifier deliver 250W of power into 8 ohms, and are stable down to 2-ohm loads and with a damping factor of  more than 4000 provides tight control over your speakers.

According to Hegel, the H400’s internal DAC is based on that found in the H600, meaning bit-perfect playback with no upsampling.

The H400 supports various popular streaming platforms to include; AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, Tidal Connect, Google Cast, and UPnP. Users can also control the amplifier through these services directly. File format support includes; MP3, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, DSF, DFF, AAC, PCM, MQA and Ogg.

The rear panels hard-wired inputs include; 1 x balanced analogue XLR, 2 x unbalanced analogue RCA, BNC S/PDIF & coaxial S/PDIF, 3 x TOSLINK, 1 x USB and 1 x RJ45 Ethernet. No phono inputs. Digital output is available via 1 x BNC coaxial S/PDIF, while subwoofers can be driven using the unbalanced RCA pre-amplifier outputs. Speaker connectivity is via the two pairs of binding posts.

Control is available using the minimalist front panel two multifunctional knobs for source selection and volume control, or their first ever Hegel Control app (iOS/Android). The knobs can be pressed to mute, pause, or navigate the device menu, with the central display showing only essential information. The minimalist appearance is maintained by locating the power button underneath the amplifier. Additionally, the Hegel Control App provides volume and input control and access to internet radio, podcasts and media server playback. The H400 also supports a defeatable auto-sense of input signals to switch sources automatically. It even has a TV remote function that lets you use your TV remote to control the amplifier.

Finally, with support for multi-room audio via Roon, AirPlay, and Google Cast, synchronized music playback is available in different areas of your home.
