Goldring Adds Ethos SE MC Flagship Cartridge – Quick Look

Goldring have just announced the Ethos SE moving coil (MC) cartridge, a special edition of its Ethos moving coil cartridge line. According to Goldring; “Sitting at the very top of Goldring’s range of moving coil cartridges, Ethos SE combines uncompromising engineering with unique new features to produce a cartridge of exquisite sound reproduction capabilities.”
Goldring states that, the Ethos ES benefits from a raft of exclusive and carefully engineered upgrades, including pure silver coils, low-reluctance pole shoes, and a black anodized, aircraft-grade aluminum body. All said to contribute to new standards in detail retrieval, channel separation, and low coloration.
Improvements in stylus dynamic mass have been made by using Ag 9999 pure silver coil windings. This lowers the number of turns required and the coils internal resistance, all resulting in; better tracking, greater transient response, a reduction in resonance throughout the audio band, and a flatter overall frequency response.
Additional mass reductions are made to the iron armature by the use of high permeability Swedish iron in a low-mass cross-shape, rather than the heavier conventional square alternative. Goldring claims that this improves channel separation, better than 30dB @ 1kHz, and delivers an armature assembly that can produce an extraordinarily realistic stereo soundstage with channel balance within 1dB @1KHz, and that high-frequency detail levels are improved, distortion is reduced, and mistracking is almost eliminated. A stiff, lightweight alloy cantilever tube connecting the armature and coils to a low tip mass (0.34mg) Vital line-contact, nude profile, diamond stylus.
The GOL-1 main generator is sill handmade by Goldring. The pole pieces on the SE version have been subjected to a new process, which is said to enhance the permeability of the metal, creating a lower reluctance magnetic circuit and resulting in a frequency response that is flattened and extended (20 Hz – 20 kHz ± 2 dB).
Supporting the entire cartridge assembly, the anodized black cartridge body shell, is precision-milled from 6082-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum. According to Goldring this material was selected for its low density and superior rigidity.
Features At A Glance:
- New pure silver coils feature fewer windings with higher conductivity, reducing the effective tip mass and internal impedance of the pick-up for improved tracking and greater transient response.
- Low-mass cross-armature core made from Swedish iron improves channel separation and produces a more realistic soundstage.
- A vital line-contact diamond stylus features a narrow, low tip-mass, large contact-area that enhances high-frequency response and minimizes distortion and coloration.
- New low reluctance pole-shoes ensure smooth and extended frequency response via an exclusive process.
- Low-resonance, aircraft-grade aluminum body is selected for its low density and superior rigidity.
