Dolby Labs has just announced a new technology that aims to let TV’s connect to compatible wireless speakers and accessories in order to offer Dolby Atmos surround sound experiences without the need for complex speaker placements, re-arranging your furniture or the need to run cables throughout the room.
This new technology is called Dolby Atmos FlexConnect and will make its debut in TCL’s 2024 TV lineup that will also use MediaTek’s Pentonic Smart TV series chipset, along with a TCL brand line of accessory wireless speakers designed for the application. Other TV companies are fully expected to follow their lead.
According to Dolby, the Technology is designed to be fast and simple to setup and uses acoustic mapping and microphones built into the TV to calibrate and “intelligently optimize the sound for any room layout and speaker setup,”. It is claimed that the system will allow users to set up and optimize their immersive speaker configuration, giving them an “authentic” Dolby ATMOS experience, without moving furniture or critical speaker placement. It is said to achieve this by balancing the sound based on the capabilities and location of all available speakers allowing the audio image to be adjusted for optimal performance.
From the news release:
“The benefits of Dolby Atmos FlexConnect include:
Using the TV’s “on board” speakers means that a soundbar will no longer be required. The problem here is that most TV speakers do not perform too well when compared to even a middle-of-the-road soundbar. However, TV manufacturers are free to provide new innovations to effectively support this new technology.
This latest innovation is to be introduced by Dolby at the upcoming 2023 IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
