British hi-fi brand ATC has announced two new products in celebration of its 50th anniversary this year, the SCM20ASL Limited Edition standmount active speakers and the C4 Sub Mk2 subwoofer. Both are limited editions and are restricted to 150 and 20 units respectively.
Continuing their quest for the best performance ATC have opted to use active 2nd order Linkwitz-Riley and all-pass crossover filters that are said to optimize phase response and provide improved imaging and tonal balance. According to ATC; “Whilst excellent results are possible from passive systems, a multi-way loudspeaker system will only realize its true potential if implemented as an active design.” Their active design offering the following advantages:
- More accurate crossovers due to fixed filter ‘load’.
- Wider practical choice of crossover type/shape due to active line level operation.
- Greater dynamic range due to elimination of passive crossover losses.
- Ideally matched amps and more efficient use of amplifier power.
- Improved frequency response and stereo matching due to speaker-amp calibration.
- Better driver control: a more direct connection to the drivers with far lower electrical resistance.
- Lower inter-modulation distortion due to reduced amplifier operating bandwidth.
The SCM20ASL LE speakers use a two-way active standmount design, featuring ATC’s proprietary 6inch ‘Super Linear’ mid/bass driver that is housed within a 20-liter sealed cabinet and is paired with a 1″/25mm ‘S-Spec’ dual-suspension tweeter. The drivers are powered by class A/B MOSFET power amplifiers which deliver 200W and 50W of continuous power to the low and high-frequency drivers respectively.
Rear panel connectivity is available via balanced XLR with adjustments for low-frequency shelf cut/boost and input sensitivity.
These limited edition speakers are finished in a high-gloss lacquer in “ATC company dark blue” and use “royal blue full-grain Napa leather” to cover the speakers front baffle.
To support the SCM20ASL Limited Edition, a limited run of 20 of ATC’s new 12” active subwoofer, the C4 Sub Mk2 Limited Edition have been produced. These limited-edition subs feature a matching gloss blue cabinet, leather upholstered baffle and silver anodized amp hardware.
