AKM New Flagship DAC – AK4499EX – Quick Look

Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) has developed a new flagship stereo D/A converter (DAC), the VELVET SOUND | VERITATM AK4499EX, which is based upon its world-class predecessor the AK4499 Current Output DAC. This new DAC supports the complete separation of the digital and analog clocking circuitry when used in conjunction with the AK4191.
AKM says that this new design uses the “latest high-quality sound technology” and a separate digital/analogue solution to achieve a sound experience as close to the original as possible. It is stated that when used in conjunction with the AK4191EQ delta-sigma modulator, the AK4499EX is the ideal analog conversion solution for playback of ultra-high-resolution sound sources: up to 1,536KHz sample rate, 64-bit PCM or 44.8MHz sample rate DSD.
The AK4499EX uses a newly developed “DWA (Data Weighted Averaging) Routing Technology” that suppresses noise caused by manufacturing process factors and achieves world-class analog characteristics that exceed those of its predecessor flagship DAC, the AK4499. The AK4499EX is claimed to have a signal-to-noise ratio of 135dB per channel (A-wtd.) and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of -124dB, exceeding the figures of its predecessor.
By adopting a two-chip playback configuration and utilizing the new “asynchronous operation mode” featured in the AK4191EQ makes it possible to completely separate the digital and analogue circuits of the clocking and provide high-precision D/A conversion with low-jitter clock.
Sample shipments are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2022, with volume production in the third quarter of 2022.
