Topping DX5 II DAC And Headphone Amp – Quick Look

All Image Credit: Topping
The DX5 II is a new DAC, headphone amplifier and pre-amplifier from Topping and is the 2nd generation evolution of the DX5, featuring a fully balanced DAC and headphone amp design. It is available in a black or white finish.
The design uses two ESS ES9039Q2M DAC chips, enabling independent decoding of the left and right channels. A new ‘X-Hybrid’ amplification architecture, is said to be a fully balanced ‘quad channel’ arrangement that is powered by an internal power supply, no external power brick here. The design achieves a dynamic range of 133dB @1kHz and THD+N < 0.00006%.

The USB input is based upon the third generation XMOS XU316 chip and Thesycon driver that supports PCM up to 768kHz and DSD to DSD512, Bluetooth supports aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, SBC, AAC and LDAC, while the TOSLINK and coaxial inputs support PCM 44.1kHz-192kHz/16bit-24bit.
With an ultra-low noise floor and 2 x 7600mW of headphone power into 16ohms, the DX5 II should be capable of driving even the most demanding of headphones. Plus, DX5 II sports a 2inch full color front panel display that shows; input signal and volume level, a spectrum analyzer or a VU meter. The design also introduces the all-new Aurora UI and PEQ (Parametric EQ), a 10-band parametric EQ which with the associated desktop software supports the import of target curves and execution of target curve correction.

Analog rear panel connectivity includes; 1 x stereo RCA and XLR line-level pre-amplifier outputs to connect to amplifiers and active speakers (pre-amp mode provides volume control). Digital inputs include; 1 x USB, 1 x coaxial and 1 x TOSLINK, plus Bluetooth. Front panel headphone support includes; 1 x balanced XLR, 1 x balanced 4.4mm and 1 x 1/4″ single-ended.
Finally control is available using the supplied remote, the three front panel buttons and multi-function rotary (volume) control, plus there is a 3.5mm 12VDC trigger input/output.
