Ratings & Reviews

My ratings are simple being marked out of a maximum of 5+. My reviews are biased towards the technical production aspects of the film with brief comments about the story line. Extras, sorry, that’s just not my ‘bag’.
Not having immersive audio yet, what did the 4K version look like? Absolutely stunning, and the sound track? Impressive once I achieved the correct volume setting.

Technical Review – 4K Blu-ray HDR10
Thor: Ragnarok can definitely be considered a reference quality 4K transfer. On my new JVC RS640 with new Da-Mat screen, using a custom 1200nit HDR gamma curve, the image was often stunning in its perfection. This movie shines on HD Blu-ray but on 4K the image was a treat to behold. It is often an outstanding visual presentation and will impress anybody that enters your home theater.
The image sharpness and clarity is virtually perfect throughout the movie. The blacks couldn’t have been any blacker providing excellent contrast ratios and depth to the image. There was no sign of noise or digital artifacts. Even in 4K the CGI integration was very good and only the odd scene showed a slight softening of the graphics background. The level of detail was tremendous, almost tactile in nature, creating real depth to surfaces, fabrics and sets. The color palette was huge with deep reds, bright blues, yellows and cyans, virtually all the colors of the rainbow, all with outstanding clarity and saturation Skin tones and textures are very realistic showing terrific detail including pores, hairs and makeup.
Quote from my HD review; “I have to assume that the 4K HDR10 version must be absolutely reference quality based upon the 1080P60 viewing.” It is, in virtually every single way.
Thor: Ragnarok offers a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 track that defaults to Dolby TrueHD 7.1 in my system. My original HD review of the SAME soundtrack was less than stellar; my apologies to all my readers. Disney appears to have set its reference level, at least on this 4K disc, 10dB below reference. So once I corrected for that the soundtrack leapt into life. It wasn’t too loud it just had all the impact, dynamics and powerful and extended bottom end that I had expected to hear when I viewed the HD version.

Story Overview
See my HD review comments here.
This 4K version of the movie provides bucketfuls of eye candy. It definetely has the Disney touch with that rock and sock em feel and some campy and childish humor. It’s very entertaining, and packs in many comedic and action momments into its 130 minutes. Once I had set the optimal volume level at +10dB above my reference level, the soundtrack really “kicked some ass”, adding a whole new dimension to the visual feast and ratcheting the entire movie experience up to the reference level that it deserved.
This 4K version of the movie is a must to see and own. It will receive many showings in my household.
