Technical Audio Devices Laboratories, Inc., have just announced the TAD-ME1TX bookshelf/standmount speaker system as the newest addition to its Evolution Series of hi-fi speakers. These maybe TAD’s smallest and least expensive speakers but you will still need a “windfall” to buy them! The TAD-ME1TX replaces the acclaimed TAD-ME1, which was introduced in 2016. It includes several refinements to achieve an enhanced audio performance and is available in either a Black or Silver white finish.
The ME1TX employs a three-way, bass-reflex design supporting a sensitivity of 85 dB, an impedance of 4 ohms and weighing in at 46.3 lbs (21 Kg). It features a new tweeter and midrange driver that are coaxially aligned, referred to by TAD as a “Coherent Source Transducer (CST)“. The 1″ (25mm) beryllium diaphragm tweeter sits at the acoustic center of the newly developed magnesium alloy 3.5” (9cm) midrange driver, providing for better-controlled directivity and more accurate phase alignment. According to TAD; “The result is wide-range sound reproduction from 420 Hz to 60 KHz by the CST driver alone, while achieving a natural attenuation characteristic and directivity pattern across all bands.”
The bass is handled by a 6.3″ (16cm) woofer that employs a Multi-layered Aramid Composite Cone (MACC) diaphragm composed of laminated layers of woven aramid fabric and a non-woven fabric of a different material. All of which is said to deliver; “a rich, clear sound in the low-frequency-range, as well as a coloration-free sound in the mid-to-low-frequency range”. The cones voice coil sits in a “refined Linear Drive Magnet Circuit (LDMC)” and is supported by a corrugated surround made of foamed polycarbonate that aids linearity. The woofers basket arms have also been strengthened to support both the increased movement of the woofer and allow for smoother propagation of sound waves behind its diaphragm.
Supporting the ME1TX bass drivers performance are TAD’s Bidirectional Aero-Dynamic Slots (ADS) which are slit-shaped ports inside the right and left side panels of the enclosure with flared openings to the front and rear panels, these flared openings allow for a smoother airflow and reduce port noise generated at high volumes.
Supporting these newly designed drivers is TAD’s ‘Structurally Inert Laminated Enclosure Technology’ (SILENT) cabinet which blends birch-plywood braces and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panels for “outstanding low-resonance” from the cabinet, which also uses 5mm thick steel panels on either side of the enclosure to further reduce cabinet vibrations.
Finally, if you are short on shelf space, there are the optional purpose designed stands – only available in pairs.
