So in the never ending attempt for the vinyl audiophile to get even closer to the analog source, Stockfisch Records have got just about as close as you can.

Stockfisch Records & Pauler Acoustics are a niche high end mastering and cutting company, based in Germany, who have been creating audiophile media for more than 40 years.

Stockfisch use their DMM lathe, shown below, to cut the audio into a copper plated steel disc. A process normally reserved to create a 14″ DMM-Master that is sent to pressing plants for the production of vinyl records.

Their new DMM-Dubplate is about the same size as a 12″ vinyl record. This makes it possible to play it on any record player and its direct cut technique reduces the sound quality losses caused by the additional steps in the production of vinyl records, such as the galvanic processes and pressing. The disc is single sided being plated with copper on only one side.

The DMM-Dubplate avoids many vinyl issues like pre-echos and crackling noises, and the high purity phosphate-copper produces very little surface noise and few clicks. The good news is that no changes to the tonearms tracking force is required to play this single sided DMM disc. I do wonder however what impact the copper to diamond frictional wear will have on the life of the stylus.

You certainly may. I would love to hear from somebody who actually purchases one of these albums as to what they sound like.
