UK based SME have been manufacturing tonearms since 1959 and turntables since 1991 and have just released updated versions of their entry level Model 6 and Model 30 belt driven turntables, the Models 8 and 35 respectively, together with a new tonearm, the Series Vi.

Model 8 Turntable

The new Model 8 replaces the entry level Model 6 and is a complete redesign. The plinth is a CNC machined chassis made from a unique polymer high density resin material providing high mass, small footprint and superb resonance absorption. It features a 40% increase in mass, larger feet for resonance control, and a more stable thicker platter. The tonearm is also improved, now using a 309-magnesium tonearm with internal crystal cable and comes with a removable head shell and WBT RCA connectors. There is a more accurate outboard speed control and it now comes in 3 colors; white, black and midnight blue.

Model 35 Turntable

The new SME Model 35 replaces the model 30 and uses a new 3-point column platform with improved suspension that is enclosed and inverted. It comes fitted with the new Series Vi tonearm which is now made from high density polymer and machined to a less resonant shape. The spindle and bearing use a hydraulic damping system that reduces movement creating a more stable rotation. The decoupling isolating feet are new and come in; black and brushed silver as standard, with gunmetal and midnight blue as optional at an additional cost. The Model 35 also features an advanced electronic speed control that was derived from the Model 60, that works together with a separate transformer and AC motor. Special finishes are available at an additional cost.

Series Vi Tonearm

SME has also launched the Series Vi tonearm, which builds on the original Series V. The “i” indicating an upgraded design with the new tonearm machined from a high-density polymer in a single piece providing better precision and reduced resonance. Its circular cross-section and low-resonance design are said to be able to deliver improved tonal clarity and mechanical performance across the frequency range.
