Rega have just announced their Nd series of affordable and handmade moving magnet cartridge’s, the Nd3 and more recently the Nd5. According to Rega; “the Nd range (patent pending) we believe is a world first to use ultra-high powered Neodymium N55 magnets which allow us to create this totally unique design.”
According to Rega, this all-new construction was developed over a 10 year period and use the world’s most powerful commercially available magnet, a crucial component that makes this unique design possible by providing more power than standard bar magnet designs.
These magnets are attached to one end of an aluminum cantilever that is fitted with either an elliptical (Nd3) or precision perfect elliptical (Nd5) nude diamond stylus. Their magnetic field generating the cartridges output from the miniaturized parallel coils which are wound in-house, utilizing 1,275 turns of 38-micron wire. This low impedance coil generator having a low inductance, thus giving improved high frequency response and soundstage.
According to Rega, each Nd cartridge is handmade by Rega technicians, and the design uses a brand-new generator geometry with perfect symmetry to achieve highly accurate channel balance, with both models having an optimized pole gap for superior linearity and crosstalk characteristics.
The complete assembly is housed in a zero tolerance injection molded glass filled polyphenylene sulphide body (PPS), which is a lightweight and highly rigid material that reduces loading on the tonearms bearings.
Both cartridges are available as a factory fitted option on the Planar 2 and Planar 3 turntables, offering exceptional performance and value for these models. The factory fitted package is offered at a discounted rate compared to when purchased separately.
Finally, even though the stylus is not user replaceable, do not worry if you wear it out or damage the cantilever. Simply return it to you Rega dealer and they will supply you with a rebuilt cartridge fitted with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad. Each rebuild is fully tested and sold at a reduced price once you trade in your worn or damaged cartridge.
