An upgraded Automat A1, the Automat A1.2 has a built-in phono stage, a new platter, included cartridge and refined mechanics to head-up this entry-level, second generation, fully automatic turntable. Like the A1, the A1.2 has its manufacturing split between Germany and the Czech Republic and Pro-Ject’s in-house assembly expertise. It will be available in either the classic black finish or white and comes with a dust cover.

The aim of this new design is to make vinyl playback as easy as possible. Simply press the start button on the A1.2 and the tonearm will lift and set itself in the starting groove of the record, and then automatically lift and go back to its armrest at the end of a record. The belt-driven Automat A1.2 features a built-in switchable phono stage for greater flexibility and there is electronic speed switching for 33⅓ and 45rpm records. The automatic arm design is based upon a fully mechanical, non-electronic automation system. There a no motors or sensors to interfere with the tonearm once the record is spinning, and the automation disengages entirely, ensuring optimal playback without introducing unwanted vibration or noise.

Aluminum die-cast platter showing access to the phono pre-amp bypass switch

The Automat A1.2 features a new die-cast aluminum platter that benefits from precise CNC machining unlike the stamped platter of the outgoing A1 model. The design includes the lightweight 8.3-inch aluminum tonearm carries over but now includes a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer headshell, helping reduce mass and increase structural rigidity. As before, the tonearm comes pre-fitted and factory pre-adjusted, including tracking force and anti-skating, with the Pick it MM E cartridge, making it plug-and-play.
