Ortofon has reintroduced its iconic MC 90A cartridge as the limited-edition Ortofon MC 90X. Building on the groundbreaking technology of the MC A90, the MC 90X features a stainless-steel structure crafted using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology, along with a Field Stabilizing Element, Wide Range Damping, Ortofon Replicant 100 Diamond stylus, and newly developed proprietary Ortofon rubber dampers.
The MC 90X features a stainless-steel structure manufactured using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology. This high-precision technique uses laser welding of microparticles to create a one-piece body that is said to enhance the overall rigidity of the structure, reduce cartridge weight, and provide superior resonance control. Another feature of the design is the Wide Range Damping (WRD) system that employs a platinum disc placed between two exclusive, in house developed and manufactured, rubber absorbers that are claimed to optimize tracking and effective damping across the entire frequency range, linearizing frequency response, minimizing distortion and resonance, and enhancing sound clarity. Frequency response is quoted as 20 Hz – 20 KHz
hannel balance and separation at 1 KHz of <0.2 dB and >28 dB respectively.
The magnet system is based on an extremely strong, neodymium magnet, which makes the generator system both compact and light. Ortofon’s Field Stabilizing Element (FSE), a small cylinder of conductive material placed inside the magnet system, ensures that the force field remains stable regardless of the movement of the armature. FSE improves the channel separation, while at the same time minimizing dynamic distortion and intermodulation.

The MC 90X Replicant 100 diamond stylus has a thin profile with a large contact surface (r/R 5/100 µm), and is designed to mimic as closely as possible the original cutting stylus, being claimed to allow it to trace grooves with “unmatched precision”. The stylus is attached to a Boron cantilever that supports the Aucurum (gold-plated 6NX oxygen-free copper) quad coils, ensuring excellent signal transmission and creating an output voltage of 0.25 mV.
