Ortofon 2MR MM Cartridges – First Look

Cartridge manufacturer Ortofon have just released a new range of MM cartridge’s that takes the existing 2M cartridge and re-shapes it into a new “reduced” housing that makes it compatible with a wider range of tonearms. This new 2MR version comes in seven models.
These new Ortofon 2MR models feature a specially designed cartridge housing tailored for turntables and tonearms that have a requirement for low form factor cartridges. With its narrow cartridge housing, it is easier to integrate without a need for modifications to, or spacers under, some tonearms, enabling easier mounting.
There are many popular turntable/tonearm combinations where the arm height is not adjustable and the regular 2M models are too high, creating an inaccurate vertical tracking angle (VTA). The reduced height of these new models make them suitable for tonearms where the VTA (arm height) is not adjustable or when adding varying thicknesses of matts and/or platter upgrades. The 2MR range reduces the overall cartridge body height to 14mm, saving 3mm over the standard version. This reduction can make a difference to the sound quality of your turntable where VTA is an issue when using the standard 2M cartridge. It’s reduced height allows the user to use spacers, if required, between the cartridge and headshell in order to fine tune its VTA.
