What a difference a day makes.

After 14 years of outstanding products and service, OPPO Digital announced it is to close its doors due to what could be a possible growing migration of viewers to streaming. Or is it that, as a smaller company, they were having difficulty in the component markets, competing against the purchasing powers of the giants like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and Phillips?

I hope that this is not another indication that these shinny plastic discs are going the way of vinyl and the CDas streaming gathers steam. I really hope not, especially as these plastic discs provide the best audio and video quality of any medium available to most users. Will the convenience of streaming now become ‘King’ in the mass market, leaving audio and video enthusiasts like us with less choice?

This is a very sad day when a manufacturer of this standing, whose hardware, software, and product support, has been the the gold standard in the DVD player business, shuts up shop.

I have owned several of their players all the way from the OPDV-971H to the BDP 103 and they have provided outstanding service and flawless technical performance. So now as I upgrade to 4K, and with 4K being in its infant days (as far as its development and roll out) where do you and I now turn? Do I buy one of the last UDP 203’s or 205’s or wait until the Panasonic UDB 9000 appears on the US market?

From the OPPO Digital web site:

Farewell

It has been 14 years since we established OPPO Digital in the United States, and with the support of our customers, technical partners, and movie/music studios, we produced many award-winning Hi-Fi audio products and universal disc players, spanning three generations from DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K UHD.

As our latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance, it is time to say goodbye. We are proud to have made such well-regarded products and to have served the enthusiast community. Without our customers’ suggestions, encouragement, and support, we could not have accomplished these achievements.

Though OPPO Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products, existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high-quality service and support that they have come to expect from OPPO Digital.

We greatly appreciate the opportunity to have developed such exciting products for our customers. It has been an honor.

Best regards,

All of us at OPPO Digital

This is like a loss in the family. Except OPPO was more reliable than family. Truly great products, reasonable price, superb support and totally reliable. That is not normal in this industry! And so OPPO goes the way of my other AV family members, Pioneer plasma TVs, Nakamichi cassette decks and my Uncle Tandberg reel-to-reel. I miss them all and miss brother OPPO already.

    I couldn’t agree more.
Even though I have seen several high end manufacturers close up, some of which I have worked with. This is the first time that I have been really upset about any manufacturer closing their doors. Especially as I was about to by their top end product. I am now reluctant to do so as I am not too sure if they will update their software to support HDR10+. With 4K still relatively new and developing, who knows what other firmware a player may need over the next 2 to 3 years.
