New iFi Audio Uno DAC – First Look

Never used a DAC before? Then this new, low cost, palm sized DAC from iFi maybe your ideal introduction to a new world of audio. It will definitely take your listening experience beyond that found in the average laptop or smartphone.

This diminutive DAC is only 88x26x81mm (WxHxD) and receives its digital audio and 5volt power via its rear panel USB-C socket. According to iFi it plays well with Windows PC’s, Apple Mac’s, smartphones and tablets.

The Uno’s internal DAC is the power-efficient, high-performance chip from ESS Technology’s Sabre HiFi series, the ES9219MQ/Q, benefiting from 32-bit HyperStream III architecture. This combines with iFi’s dedicated clock circuitry utilizing a specialized crystal oscillator, to “deliver ultra-low distortion, excellent clarity and impressive dynamic range.” iFi has also taken advantage of several of the DAC’s advanced features such as; adjustable analogue gain with DRE (Dynamic Range Enhancement), plus technologies to minimize THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and crosstalk.

The unit supports PCM up to 32bit/384kHz, MQA (Tidal Masters) and DSD up to 11.2MHz. An illuminated ring behind the volume control changes color to indicate the format and sample rate of the incoming digital signal.

The front panel sports a central volume knob with a left hand side EQ button that cycles through three settings; Music, Movie, and Games with the illuminated logos on top of the Uno indicating the current mode. These EQ modes are created via proprietary digital circuitry. The adjacent Power Match button optionally adds 6dB of gain to help match the connected headphones.New iFi Audio Uno DAC - First Look
