Monitor Audio’s latest bookshelf speaker the Studio 89 follows in the footsteps of the well respected 1989 Studio 15, being slightly smaller and having a similar appearance. This latest design leverages Hyphn’s Transparent Design Philosophy. The designs high-gloss black cabinet and gold-anodized drivers not only pay homage to the 80’s speaker’s aesthetic but also separate the Studio 89 from the rest of Monitor Audio’s offerings, as this finish option stands alone for the new model that may also be stand mounted.

This design features the company’s latest MPD (Micro-Pleated Diaphragm) tweeter, sandwiched between two of Monitor Audio’s RDT (Rigid-Diaphragm Technology) mid/bass drivers. These twin driver cones are composed of three ultra-thin layers; a C-CAM (ceramic-coated aluminum magnesium) outer skin, sitting over a Nomex honeycomb central core with the underside skin made up of woven carbon fiber. According to Monitor Audio this creates and exceptionally strong and lightweight structure.

The crossover has undergone a significant redesign in order to fully complement the drivers While the rigid cabinet, made from an 18mm thick front baffle and 15mm side walls is also supported by precision-placed internal walls and uses through-bolt bracing to further strengthen its design. A pair of “high-velocity” HiVe II slot ports, “reducing potential turbulence and air noise” complete its ported design.
