LEAK Revives Sandwich 150 And Sandwich 250 Loudspeakers

Cambridgeshire, UK, based audio company LEAK, one of the mid-twentieth centuries biggest names in Hi-Fi returned to the market in 2020 with the arrival of the LEAK Stereo 130 integrated amplifier and LEAK CDT CD transport. They continue to expanded their product line with two new loudspeaker models, the LEAK Sandwich 150 and LEAK Sandwich 250.
Both models originally debuted in 1961, now 63 years on this landmark British loudspeaker design returns, taking the originally established and highly innovative design and applying state-of the-art technologies and materials to deliver a new incarnation of this British classic.
Typical Driver Sandwich Construction
The original designs directly addressed the issue of insufficient stiffness of mid/bass driver cones by using a layer of expanded polystyrene between two layers of aluminum foil sheets. This latest incarnation now feature a stiff outer layer of aluminum bonded to a core of aircraft-grade polymethacrylimide structural foam.
Both designs use the same textile dome tweeter design with the cabinets coming as mirror-imaged pairs that are optimized for left and right channels, ensuring a precise stereo image and a broad soundstage.
Textile Dome Tweeter Construction
Cabinet construction also uses a sandwich technique, with a combination of MDF and high density particle board layers, with special glue that bonds the layers and provides resonance-damping properties. The cabinet is then internally spot braced together with specific front-rear braces, and are then finished in a walnut wood veneer. Dual rear ports extend bass response and their precise flaring minimizes ‘chuffing’.
LEAK Sandwich 150
The Sandwich 150 is a two-way design with a textile-dome tweeter and a 6.5″ mid/bass driver that crossover at 2.4KHz.
LEAK Sandwich 250
The Sandwich 250 is a larger three-way model with 11″ bass and 4.25″ midrange drivers, plus the textile dome tweeter. Crossover frequencies are stated as; 470Hz and 3.1KHz. The stand is an optional extra.
Sandwich 250 Stand
Ensuring the ideal height for a typically seated position, a matching stand for the Sandwich 250 has also been released. It is made from high carbon steel and comes with a veneered base and stainless steel spikes.
