HDMI Data Rate Calculator
It has come to my attention that many readers would like to know how to simply calculate their HDMI data rates for all the different configurations that are now possible with 4K and HD. I have presented several tables to show these rates but they are not the easiest for some to interpret. So in order to make your life easier take look at this Extron HDMI link budget calculator.
The basic tabs gives quick answers but the the Advanced tab provides a lot more options to selecting your data formats and available technical information.
In both cases your results maybe printed out for your records.
Many will find that some of your existing HD cables that support 11.14 Gb/s (or lower) will see that provided you do not exceed certain parameters they will still happily carry one or more of the flavors of 4KUHD. An example would be 3840×2160 UHD, 23.98 frame rate, 8 bit, 4:4:4 will only require 8.9Gb/s. A bit rate that is generally well within the capability of many HD HDMI cables. Most players will allow you to force them to provide the required parameters if you take them off their auto modes and manual set a combination of rates that you know are within the bandwidth of your HDMI cable.
