Despite the sales of those shiny plastic discs falling companies continue to release new models of CD players. The latest model from Gold Note is the CD-5, the latest entry in the Italian company’s 5 Series of half-width components.
This new model is a slot loader that uses a tray mechanism manufactured by Stream Unlimited. Technical details are very “thin on the ground”, but inside the design uses a 768KHz/32-bit AKM AK4493 stereo premium DAC, with no mention of master clock, power supply or filter designs. PCB design is said to be multilayer with the use of audio-grade components and sealed relays. However, its performance is said to be enhanced with the use of the optional PSU-10 EVO external power supply.
One unusual feature is the inclusion of a small front panel multifunction touchscreen that supports all transport and menu functions plus track information. A simple IR remote is also included for seated operation.
Rear panel connectivity includes;1 pair each balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs plus 1 each optical and coaxial digital outputs. There are no external digital inputs to allow the CD-5 to be used as a stand alone DAC. It does support the use of the external PSU-10 EVO: Inductive Dual-Mono power supply. This upgrade is said to; “Elevate your audio experience’ and “enhances dynamic range”.
