Focal Diva Utopia Wireless Loudspeakers – First Look

French Hi-Fi brand Focal has added its first wireless speaker to the high end Utopia series, the Focal Diva Utopia. The Diva Utopia is a three-way floorstanding bass reflex design that is driven by three Class AB amplifiers supplied by Focal’s sister brand, Naim Audio. It offers the latest wireless technologies, extensive wired and wireless connectivity, and is available in a grey felt finish.
This three-way bass reflex design features a high-density molded polymer body with “structural reinforcement” and floating side panels covered in grey felt material. The speakers feature Focal’s signature 27mm inverted ‘M’ dome beryllium tweeter, a 16.5cm ‘W’ cone midrange driver, and four ‘W’ 16.5cm woofers in a push-pull configuration. These drivers are powered by dedicated Class A/B amplifiers – 250W for bass and 75W each for tweeter and midrange, supporting a frequency range of 27Hz – 40kHz (+/-3dB) and producing an acoustical output of 116dB SPL (@1m) per pair.
The wireless functionality is designed around the Naim Pulse Platform, whose Ultra Wideband (UWB) streaming technology architecture can handle up to 32-bit/384KHz hi-res quality in several file formats. This allows seamless connectivity with no compression or latency issues. Wireless streaming connectivity between speakers is limited to 24-bit/96KHz. However, ‘upgrading’ to the ‘Hi-Res’ RJ45 wired link between the speakers provides up to 24-bit/192KHz resolution.
Wireless streaming is available via AirPlay, Google Cast, UPnP, Bluetooth 5.3, Spotify via Spotify Connect, TIDAL via TIDAL Connect and QQ Music via QPlay. Support for the major file formats and CODECS includes; WAV, FLAC, AIFF, AAC, HLS, DASH, OGG and DSD, plus Bluetooth aptX Adaptive, SBC and AAC. With music services via the Focal & Naim app to include; TIDAL, Qobuz, Internet radio and podcasts, plus UPnP support for your digital audio library. Currently the Diva Utopia is not Roon Ready.
For those tied to wired connectivity the rear panel offers the options of; HDMI eARC, optical, USB type A and RCA line-level inputs.
Finally, control is available via Zigbee, the Focal & Naim control app for iOS and Android, and the usual range of voice assistants.
