Dynaudio Launches Confidence 20A Active Loudspeaker

Currently, Dynaudio’s Confidence 20 is the Danish company’s flagship standmount loudspeaker and is a passive design. The Confidence 20A, A for Active, has taken the original Confidence 20 design together with an upgraded version of its exponentially-flared, downward-firing port, its 1.1″ (2.8cm) Esotar3 soft dome tweeter and 7″ (18cm) NeoTec MSP mid/bass driver as the basis for this new active design. The 20A now includes; two Class D power amplifiers, a pair of DAC’s and a DSP controlled active crossover, all externally mounted inside the custom speakers stands. This new model is available in Space High Gloss and Snow High Gloss finishes.
The design splits the incoming signal between the two drivers in the digital domain with a crossover of 2.5KHz that uses a minimum phase Infinite Impulse Response filters with low Q, so they act and sound very much like passive filters, with a natural impulse response. The resulting signals are applied to a pair of DAC’s whose outputs drive a pair of Class D amplifiers supplied by another Danish company Pascal. These amplifiers are then matched to the appropriate drivers, with 400 watts for the mid/bass driver, and 150 watts for the tweeter. The final result of this upgrade is superior phase accuracy and an increased bass extension of 9Hz. Dynaudio quotes the passive Confidence 20 as -3dB @ 42Hz but the Confidence 20A is quoted to be -3dB @ 33Hz, with a top-end frequency response of -3dB @ 25KHz.
The aluminum stands act as both a heatsink for the amplifiers and contain all the required connectivity and controls for each speaker. Connectivity includes; 1 x balanced XLR analog and AES3 digital inputs and 1 x balanced XLR AES3 digital output. Controls include; settings for left/right placement; adjustable analogue sensitivity controls; sound-balance filters (‘Dark’, ‘Neutral’ and ‘Bright’ adjustments derived from our pro speakers); sample-rate conversion controls to preserve native resolution or enable true gapless playback; and native room-position settings (‘Wall’, ‘Corner’ and ‘Free’) and control for the LED logo’s brightness. The front panel “Y” LED indicating; white-on, flashing red-analog clipping, pulsing red-thermal protection.
