Font & Rear Views of the AVR X6700H 8K Receiver

If you are a regular visitor to my site you will already know my views regarding 8K video. But here we go again, ‘if they build it, many will buy it’.

Denon’s world first 8K-ready AVRs are feature-packed and future-proofed. They build on the extensive features of their X series predecessors, adding 8K support, a pre-amp mode and several HDMI 2.1 features.

There are four new models, each replacing a receiver from last year’s X series. The Denon AVR-X6700H ($2,499), AVR-X4700H ($1,699), AVR-X3700H ($1,199), and AVR-X2700H ($849)

Each amplifier’s single 8K HDMI input enables 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz video pass-through and the playback of HDR formats including HDR10, HDR10+, dynamic HDR, Dolby Vision and HLG. All HDMI inputs including the component video (4700/6700) also supports scaling of HD to 8K. These same inputs also support a new HDMI feature called Quick Media Switching (QMS), which allows a source to instantly switch the resolution or frame rate to eliminate screen blackout.

All receivers support the latest surround formats. The 11-channel AVC-X6700H and 9-channel AVC-X4700H support Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization Technology, DTS:X, DTS Virtual:X and Auro-3D out of the box. Later the year, via a firmware upgrade, the 6700 will also support DTS:X Pro, which allows up to 13 channels of DTS:X decoding with speaker configurations such as 7.2.6 or 9.2.4.

Both of these amps, and the AVC-X3700H, can also decode IMAX Enhanced soundtracks. In addition to AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth, the HEOS multi-room streaming platform is built-in and offers direct access to streaming services, including Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music HD and Deezer, and all are Roon tested and certified.

Gamers were not forgotten with support for Variable Refresh Rate (to reduce frame tearing), Auto Low Latency Mode (automatic switching to a ‘game mode’ to reduce input lag) and Quick Frame Transport (to decrease display latency).

The top three receivers support Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and SubEQ HT for independent subwoofer calibration, while the X3700 only supports Audyssey MultEQ XT room EQ calibration technology. Two Audyssey preset memories allow for switching on the fly between two preferred EQ configurations.

The 6700, 4700 and 3700 also have a ‘Pre-Amplifier’ mode that improves signal clipping levels by disconnecting the signal drive to the internal power amplifiers when the receiver is used as an AV processor and all speakers are powered by external amplifiers.
